Facilities

Buildings

Selwyn's historic brick buildings are arranged around a central quadrangle: 'the Quad'. This placement of buildings and the consequent central lawn is usually known as a 'court' in Cambridge where architecturally similar colleges exist. Furnished with a lawn and attractive gardens, the Selwyn Quad is a hub of day to day College social life, a place of random meetings and accidental conversations.

IT & Wireless

Wireless access is available in all College buildings and common areas via Selwyn's broadband network. Additionally, Selwyn's main accommodation buildings, Whitehead, Sargood and Richardson have wired ports connected directly to the University fibre. Several computers and a printer are also available on the network for student use.

Northcroft Library and Study Centre

The Northcroft library and Study Centre is a central to Selwyn's collegiate identity; it is a Selwyn-only facility containing, tutorial rooms, a seminar room, a reading room, computer facilities, college memorabilia, and a small chapel.

Squash and Tennis Courts

Selwyn is the only College at Otago with its own designated squash court; this facility is free for current and former residents to use. The College also has a tennis court which is heavily subscribed in the longer summer evenings.

Music Rooms

Dedicated music rooms at the College provide a location for individual and band practice. The College has its own rock band and holds instrumental and other competitions with Knox College in Dunedin and College House in Christchurch.

Facilities Upgrades, Summer 2009

Sargood Hall embarked upon a two-stage redevelopment programme, starting this summer. First opened in 1949, Sargood Hall is named after a major benefactor, Sir Percy Sargood. The first stage is the complete rebuilding of its two bathrooms; the second is the restoration of an area that is currently converted to four bedrooms to be the senior common room for the college. Virginia Fay architects have been engaged for the redesign.

The opportunity to interact with alumni and friends of the College is of fundamental importance to collegiate life, but at the moment there is no suitable space set aside for hosting such people. The senior common room will also provide a place to welcome Board members, Fellows and guests.
