Membership Application Process

Selwyn College attracts enthusiastic and talented students from across Aotearoa and beyond who are committed to achieving academic excellence and participating fully in college life. Selwyn College strives to support individuals who aspire to make a positive difference in the world.

Selwyn College membership comprises a combination of First-Years and Returners (second-year students), with the number of offers made for each varying slightly from year to year.

First-Year Applicants

Prospective first-year applicants are required to submit an application online through the University of Otago website and selecting Selwyn College as their first preference.  Further information can be obtained here.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the time necessary to submit a well written and detailed application.  When selecting new members, consideration is given to criteria such as academic achievement, participation in school and/or community activities, cultural and sporting achievement, social impact interests (eg sustainability, volunteering, enterprise, etc).  Evidence of demonstrated leadership ability is also well regarded. All other things being equal, previous family connection with Selwyn is then considered.

The aim is to establish a diverse, well-balanced and healthy community that enables each resident member to flourish.

Whilst inquiries regarding admissions may be made at any time, applications for the 2021 residential year are closed.

Returner Applicants

Returners play a significant and positive role in nurturing the Selwyn experience and "passing on the torch of life" (from our Latin motto, Vitai lampada trudunt).  Members seeking to reside at Selwyn College for a second year are required to submit an application to the Warden.  This occurs mid-year with specific detail regarding the process shared by the Warden near to the time.
