Scholarships at Selwyn College

While Selwyn has been around longer than any other College at Otago, it recognises that future success depends upon continuing to attract the best and brightest students from New Zealand and abroad. Students applying to Selwyn are encouraged to consider the wide variety of scholarships available to them.

A significant proportion of those at Selwyn are recipients of University of Otago undergraduate scholarships. Over the past ten years, residents at Selwyn have been statistically more likely to receive a University of Otago Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) scholarship than residents at any other Otago College. Selwyn has also had its fair share of Alumni, Dux and Maori and Pacific Scholarships.

College scholarships on offer

Selwyn College offers up to three Blog Scholarships to returning students each year. These Blog Scholarships (value $1900) are awarded to students completing a first year in the College who would wish to return but who might otherwise face a year of hardship in a draughty flat off-campus.

Selwyn Senior Resident Scholarships (value $10,000+) are available to five Senior or Post-Graduate Students wishing to make a contribution to the Selwyn community. Recipients are awarded membership of the Selwyn College Senior Common Room and are expected to live in the College for a year. They have an important role mentoring younger students.

A range of other organisations provide scholarships. Scholarships from your local area may assist you in paying your way. Recent students in residence have been recipients of Iwi, corporate (especially Legal and Accounting firms), Masonic and Reserve Bank scholarships.

The importance of scholarships

Over generations, Selwyn has prided itself in attracting students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Part of the quintessential Selwyn experience involves living alongside people from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural traditions. No education is richer than one challenged by fellow students with ideas different to one's own. To continue this experience, Selwyn seeks to support students from a diverse range of geographic locations and financial situations.

Future first year scholarships are planned at the College. These are likely to include choral, arts and theological scholarships. From time to time a Post Graduate Theological student residence may be named 'The Selwyn Scholar'.

Postgraduate scholarships

Beyond Selwyn, scholarships for postgraduate study are available. Numerous Selwynites have received University of Otago Doctoral Scholarships. Newer overseas scholarships such as the Fulbright are rising in prominence. Several Selwyn residents have also attended Oxford University as Rhodes Scholarship recipients.
